Non?native fish facilitate non?native snails and alter food web structure in experimental pond communities

چکیده

Contemporary ecosystems commonly support multiple non-native species, which can alter community structure and directly or indirectly interact with one another. Novel interactions between invasive species result in the facilitation suppression of both invaders, making it important to understand underlying mechanisms that affect invasion outcomes. Goldfish Carassius auratus Chinese mystery snails Cipangopaludina chinensis have been introduced widely through aquarium trade co-occur their ranges. We used an outdoor mesocosm experiment assess separate combined effects goldfish on urban pond investigate whether affected another positively, neutrally negatively. predicted distinct trophic levels each anti-predator traits would lead positive invaders synergistic aquatic community. increased turbidity decreased filamentous algae, zooplankton, juvenile native survival amphibians via consumptive effects. periphyton, phytoplankton body size surviving green frogs Lithobates clamitans cascades and/or release from competition. Mystery had more subtle including reducing growth rates grey tree Hyla versicolor, likely competitive interactions. With present, showed reproductive success (higher biomass juveniles), due indirect other herbivores. In contrast snails, did not consume unique (e.g. large shell thickness). slightly reduced but survival. These results suggest unidirectional changes food web. Overall, our study found strong direct particularly goldfish, provides experimental for invasional meltdown hypothesis within waterbodies, are especially prone invasions. Fuel breaks affect nonnative species abundance in Californian plant communities.

We evaluated the abundance of nonnative plants on fuel breaks and in adjacent untreated areas to determine if fuel treatments promote the invasion of nonnative plant species. Understanding the relationship between fuel treatments and nonnative plants is becoming increasingly important as federal and state agencies are currently implementing large fuel treatment programs throughout the United St...

Fluvial network topology shapes communities of native and nonnative amphipods

Habitat connectivity crucially influences dispersal of organisms. It is especially seen as an important driver of the spatial structuring of biological communities in ecosystems that have intrinsic and general connectivity patterns, such as the universal dendritic structure of fluvial networks. These networks not only define dispersal of native species, but also represent corridors of biologica...

Nonnative fish stocking alters stream ecosystem nutrient dynamics.

Each year, millions of hatchery-raised fish are stocked into streams and rivers worldwide, yet the effects of hatchery-raised fish on stream nutrient cycles have seldom been examined. We quantified the influence of supplemental nonnative fish stocking, a widespread recreational fishery management practice, on in-stream nutrient storage and cycling. We predicted that supplemental, hatchery-raise...

Morphological Structure in Native and Nonnative Language Processing

This article presents a selective overview of studies that have investigated how advanced adult second language (L2) learners process morphologically complex words. The studies reported here have used different kinds of experimental tasks (including speeded grammaticality judgments, lexical decision, and priming) to examine three domains of morphological processing (regular and irregular inflec...
